Another Norfolk Southern Train Carrying Hazardous Materials Derails—This Time in Michigan
Another Norfolk Southern train has derailed, this time in Van Buren Township, Michigan. The train—like the one that derailed in East Palestine, Ohio less than two weeks ago—was carrying hazardous materials.
The cause of the derailment, which happened just after 9am this morning, is still unknown. But based on video of the incident, it appears about 6 cars derailed.
Early reports suggested one of those derailed cars was carrying hazardous cargo. However, according to a tweet from The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy, “One railcar contained liquid chlorine, however [it] was away from overturned section and was included with section of railcars removed first.”
The department also stated that no hazardous materials were released into soil or waterways following the derailment.
Van Buren is about 30 miles west of Detroit, Michigan.
