Couple Wins $325k Settlement After Police Fire Pepper Balls into their Car

In May of 2020, Shaiitarrio Brown and his 19-week pregnant fiancée, Brittany King, were delivering Door Dash orders during a nearby protest over the murder of George Floyd.

While, allegedly, attempting to control the crowd, Denver Police shot their car with dozens of rounds of pepper balls—chemical irritants. This week they’ve been awarded a $325k settlement by the city of Denver.

In the incident, which was recorded and went viral, Brown can be seen exiting his vehicle and yelling, letting the officers know they’d shot at a pregnant woman.

Brown had cuts and bruising from the incident, while King ended up with a broken hand, chemical burns and bruising. They were stuck in the face and stomach with the chemical ammunition, which came through their open car windows.

To make matters worse, the couple was living in their vehicle at the time, which they could not do after the chemical irritants soaked into the car’s upholstery.

King’s pregnancy also suffered complications as a result of exposure to the chemicals in the pepper ball. Their baby has shown signs of developmental delays as well.

Is this settlement justice?
