Gunman on the Loose After Killing 10 Near Lunar New Year Celebration Outside of Los Ángeles

A gunman is still on the loose after a mass shooting at a Monterey Park ballroom dance studio just outside of Los Ángeles, California.

Many details about the incident are still unknown but we know the gunman opened fire at Lai Lai Ballroom & Studio last night just before 10:30pm, following the city’s Lunar New Year’s Eve festivities.

Many people were pronounced dead when firefighters first arrived on the scene. So far, 10 people have died and at least 10 more sustained injuries from the incident.

Monterey Park is a suburban community, about 7 miles from Los Ángeles, largely comprised of Asian immigrants and first generation Asian-Americans—many of whom have roots in China. According to the census, the city is nearly 70% Asian.

Sunday’s Lunar New Year celebration, one of the largest in the area, has been cancelled.

This marks the fifth mass shooting in the US in January alone.
