Ramsey County to Review 70+ Criminal Cases After Questions Arise About the Former Medical Examiner’s Testimonies

Ramsey County plans to review upwards of 70 criminal cases after questions arose regarding the accuracy of former medical examiner Michael McGee’s testimonies.

Ramsey County Attorney John Choi, who began exploring cases McGee testified for back in September of 2021, is leading the investigation.

Choi’s decision to re-examine the cases came after Judge Ralph R. Erickson vacated the death sentence of a man whose trial McGee testified in.

Judge Erickson wrote, "Ramsey County Medical Examiner Michael McGee ("McGee") presented unsupported, misleading, and inaccurate testimony regarding the cause of [the victim’s] death.”

Choi’s office identified over 200 cases in which McGee provided testimony for the prosecution. They enlisted consultants, the Prosecutor's Center For Excellence, which researched the cases before ultimately determining that 71 of them required further investigation.

McGee served as medical examiner for Ramsey County from 1985 until 2019.
