Ron DeSantis Bans AP African American Studies Course
Florida high schoolers will not be able to participate in an advanced placement African American studies course.
Last week, the administration of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, penned a letter to College Board, the organization that oversees AP studies courses.
In the letter, a representative for the Florida Department of Education's Office of Articulation stated that the specified AP African American studies course was “inexplicably contrary to Florida law and significantly lacks educational value."
The letter continued, “In the future, should College Board be willing to come back to the table with lawful, historically accurate content, FDOE will always be willing to reopen the discussion.”
Even though the FL Office of Articulation insisted that the course was “inexplicably” unlawful, it is worth noting that DeSantis signed the “Stop W.O.K.E Act” into law last year.
The act prohibits curriculum on race or diversity that suggests a person’s “status as either privileged or oppressed is necessarily determined by his or her race, color, national origin, or sex.”
Additionally, the bill also forbids schools and places of business from “subjecting any student or employee to training or instruction that espouses, promotes, advances, inculcates, or compels such individuals to believe specified concepts constitutes discrimination based on race, color, sex, or national origin.”
How will the affect Florida high school students in the immediate future and long term?
