Texas State Rep Who Called Drag Performers “Groomers” Resigns After Investigation Finds He Had a Sexual Relationship with Teen Staffer

Bryan Slaton, the former pastor and Republican Texas State Rep. who called drag performers “groomers,” has resigned ahead of an expulsion hearing.

Slaton’s resignation comes days after an investigation uncovered that he’d had intercourse with a 19-year-old member of his staff, and had provided the underaged teen with alcohol—both acts violating chamber rules.

Upon completing its investigation, the General Investigating Committee recommended that Slaton be expelled.

However, because Slaton resigned, he will remain in office until a replacement is elected. As a result of this loophole, the investigative committee has suggested it still plans to hold an expulsion vote tomorrow so that Slaton will be immediately relieved of his duties.

In addition to being a former pastor, Slaton is married and a father.

In his resignation letter to Texas Governor Greg Abbott, Slaton, who represented Royse City, stated, “It has been an honor to represent my friends, neighbors and the great people and communities of House District 2.”

He continued, “They voted overwhelmingly to send me to the Capitol as their representative in two elections, and I worked daily to meet their expectations. My decision today is to ensure that their expectations will continue to be met by a new representative who will also work hard on their behalf.”
