Fourth Former MPD Officer Guilty in George Floyd Murder

Tou Thao, the former Minneapolis police officer who acted as crowd control while fellow former officer Derek Chauvin fatally restrained George Floyd in 2020, has been found guilty of aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter.

Judge Peter Cahill wrote of his verdict, “Like the bystanders, Thao could see Floyd's life slowly ebbing away as the restraint continued…Yet Thao made a conscious decision to actively participate in Floyd's death: he held back the concerned bystanders and even prevented an off-duty Minneapolis firefighter from rendering the medical aid Floyd so desperately needed."

Thao is already serving a 3.5 year federal sentence after being found guilty of violating Floyd’s civil rights. He is now the last of the four former officers to be found guilty in the state case. He faces a prison sentence of up to 57 additional months behind bars.
