Harry Styles Wins Album of the Year at the GRAMMYs and Makes a Controversial Statement
Last night Harry Styles won big at the GRAMMYs, taking home the coveted Album of the Year award for Harry’s House.
However, during his acceptance speech Styles said, “This doesn’t happen to people like me very often,” a statement which has prompted a larger conversation about white privilege.
The GRAMMY Awards have named an Album of the Year 65 times, Styles is the 32nd white man to win it. Whereas, only 11 Black musicians have won in the category, and only two Latinx artists have taken home that honor.
Past nominees of color to win in the Album of the Year category include Jon Batiste, Herbie Hancock, Ray Charles, Outkast, Santana, Lauryn Hill, Whitney Houston, Natalie Cole, Quincy Jones, Lionel Richie, Michael Jackson, João Gilberto, and Stevie Wonder.
Both Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar have been nominated four times each and have yet to win.
What do ya’ll think of Styles’ statement?
