60 Year Old Woman in a Wheelchair Dies in Police Custody After They Ignore Cries for Help
“Listen to me!” a Knoxville, TN police officer shouted at 60 year old Lisa Edwards as she lay on the ground outside of Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center on February 5th, “This is the Lord’s day! All I want to do is get me some coffee and some oatmeal. I’m not going to deal with your mess this morning.”
Hospital security called the police after Edwards refused to leave the medical facility after being discharged. Edwards asked for additional care from hospital workers, and was trespassed when she would not leave.
When police arrived, Edwards insisted she was having a stroke and couldn’t breathe. She’d previously suffered a stroke and was in poor health.
At least 6 officers and security guards were present, according to body cam footage (which we won’t be sharing). They attempt to get Edwards into the police cruiser as she exhibits signs of a stroke including slurred speech and the right side of her body appearing limp. The officers repeatedly refer to her as “dead weight.”
Officers go back and forth with each other, all insisting she’s faking her illness. “My problem with me is that, I know it’s all an act,” an officer says to his team. “We all know that [expletive], but unfortunately if she goes over and can’t breathe,” another responds. “The act’s going to turn into a problem.”
Meanwhile Edwards is insisting she’s going to die and begging for assistance.
After getting her into the cruiser, she becomes unconscious. They drive her back to the same hospital she was picked up in front of. It turns out Edwards was having a stroke. She was placed on life support and died the following day.
Edwards’ family has since seen the video footage and they’re demanding justice. “They treated her like she’s trash!” insisted her son, Tim Boylan.
The officers involved are on standard leave. But as of right now, the DA will mot be pressing charges because, according to reports, the officers’ actions did not directly cause Edwards’ stroke. However, the family believes officers were negligent and that their actions contributed to her death. They have hired an attorney.
