Black Man Paralyzed During An Arrest Settles With City of New Haven for $45 Million

Randy Cox, a Black man paralyzed while riding in the back of a New Haven, Connecticut police van after being arrested, has settled with the City for a historic sum of $45 million.

In June 2022, 36 year old Cox was arrested on charges which were later dismissed. He was handcuffed and placed in the back of a New Haven police van, which did not have seatbelts. The van braked aggressively, propelling Cox into the metal divider, and paralyzing him from the chest down.

Cox begged for help, but officers accused him of faking his pain and being intoxicated. They can be seen on bodycam footage making fun of Cox and dragging him into a cell via his feet. Only later would he receive medical attention.

Cox’s lawyer, @attorneycrump has announced this is the largest police misconduct settlement in the country’s history.

In a statement, Crump insisted, “The city’s mistakes have been well documented.”

The statement continued, “But today is a moment to look to the future, so New Haven residents can have confidence in their city and their police department.”
