A Second Michigan School District Bans Backpacks Citing Gun Safety Measures

That’s right, it’s the backpacks.

A second Michigan school district has banned backpacks after several gun-related incidents. Following finding a loaded gun in the backpack of a third grader—the fourth incident of its kind in the district this school year—Grand Rapids School District announced on Wednesday it is banning all backpacks “until further notice.”

The announcement comes less than two weeks after Flint Community Schools’ backpack ban went into effect on May 1st.

In a statement, a rep for Flint Community Schools explained, “We have reached a point where we must make difficult decisions.”

Meaningful gun control legislation isn’t being passed. Meanwhile, youth are stuck carrying their personal belongings around by the armful. Yes, this makes sense…
