City of Mpls to Buy Gas Station at George Floyd Square

12/10/2022

In a unanimous vote during Thursday’s Minneapolis City Council meeting, the council voted to purchase the boarded up Speedway gas station at the corner of George Floyd Square.

According to reports, the space will be transformed into a racial justice healing center and will serve as a permanent memorial to George Floyd, who was murdered by former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin in May of 2020.

Activists and organizers are concerned that the city’s involvement in this project will result in a lack of community input in a space that has been maintained and protected by the community for several years.

What do you think? Will the city be able to create a space that reflects and respects George Floyd’s memory and the community?
